EvE Online System Requirements

This morning I fired up the laptop again and turned everything off that didn’t need to be running for me to play EvE.  Then I turned the client back on; it only took it 7 and a half minutes for it start-up this time but PI took just as long and reactions to my click took just as long too.  I shut it down, it was absolutely, definitely, positively almost killing me to interact with EvE in this way. So I shut it down before it shut itself down and then I googled  the EvE Online System Requirements.  Thinking that there must be something wrong with this laptop because I first played EvE almost 5 years ago on my first self built machine (somewhat technical information to follow)  which had an Athlon XP 1800+ processor, 512 Mb of RAM and an integrated video card; so by comparison this 2.1 GHz processor, 990 Mb of RAM and an Nvidia graphics card should do the work without complaining… much.

Away, the System Requirements for EvE Online are as follows:

Minimum System Requirements:

  • OS: Windows® XP Service Pack 2 / Vista / 7
  • CPU: Intel Pentium® or AMD @ 1,5 Ghz
  • RAM: XP (SP2) – 1 GB / Vista – 1.5 GB
  • HD space: 6gig Free Space
  • Network: 56k modem or better Internet connection
  • Video: 64 MB Shader Model 2.0 Graphics cards such as GeForce FX (5 series) class card or higher, ATi 9500, x300 series or higher and Similar chips from other manufacturers
  • Drivers: DirectX® 9.0c (included) and latest video drivers
  • DVD-ROM : 2 speed DVD reader or greater required.

So I have solid checks on all fronts, except for the RAM section which is only a half hearted sort of check which tends to look more like a slanted line and maybe with some sort of weird little foot on the bottom.  Next I take a look at the recommended system requirements; which are as follows:

Recommended system configuration for running EVE Online:

  • OS: Windows® XP Service Pack 2 / Vista / 7
  • CPU: Intel Pentium® or AMD dual core @ 2 Ghz
  • RAM: 2 GB
  • HD space: 6gig Free Space
  • Network: ADSL connection or faster
  • Video: 256 MB Shader Model 3.0 Graphics cards such as GeForce 8 class card or higher, ATi 3000 series or higher and Similar chips from other manufacturers
  • Drivers: DirectX® 9.0c (included) and latest video drivers
  • DVD-ROM : 2 speed DVD reader or greater required.
Well this laptop fails on almost every front here and even then it’s only another on of those half-hearted emo checks by the processor requirement.  But it also goes to show why my current desk top rig runs EvE like a champ.  Take a look at all of the recommended system requirements again; almost every line item there can be multiplied by 2.5 and you get pretty close to what’s running on that beast.

Oh and just for fun here is the little disclaimer thingy that always shows up at the bottom of the system requirements list:

The minimum screen resolution for EVE is 1024×768.
Audio hardware must support SSE and be Direct Sound compatible. For optimum performance, use latest drivers available.
Please note that Windows 95, 98, ME, NT and 2000 are not supported.

Nothing really spectacular there, just thought it would be good to throw that in for completeness sake.
